Kadence Lea Sunflower Cave, a proud member of the Haíɫzaq (Heiltsuk) Nation. I am the granddaughter of Wilfred (Hàłqiaxa) and Sharron Martin of Bella Bella, and I carry the lineage of my late grandmother of Rivers Inlet.
Kadence Cave, a UBC student and cultural educator, was there with her infant son and suggested that age-appropriate discussions with children can start with something as simple as a storybook.
“It's starting the journey, and as children grow, then we can start introducing more traumatic things that've happened in the past that've brought us to where we are now,” she said.

Dr. Sonya Woloshen carries a heart of gold. She has been a constant source of encouragement, inspiration, and support throughout my journey. From commissioning the very first beaded UBC crest I created to helping bring my ideas for wellness, community, and Indigenous education to life, Sonya has always believed in me. She created opportunities that allowed my creativity and passion to flourish, and her support has been the root of the development of many of the resources and initiatives featured here. She leads with kindness, relationship, and community at the heart of everything she does. Her dedication to uplifting others and creating spaces where people feel valued and supported is truly remarkable. There are no words that can fully express my gratitude for all that Sonya has done. Her generosity, guidance, and unwavering belief in others continue to make a lasting impact.
